Treatment of IBS
Treatment of IBS
First of all, this is not a medical blog. I am simply an individual who used to have IBS, and apart from an occasional flare up, I no longer get the symptoms. So I hope I may be able to help you by sharing what helped me. You should always consult your doctor if you have a health problem.
There were 3 main things that helped reduce my symptoms of ibs.
1. Treatment of ibs.
The first was drinking an aloe gel drink (see the picture on the right for the kind I used). Now, you may think that if I had a benefit it was simply because I had been told it would help? However, I wasn't told that! A friend simply recommended it to me as she felt good since taking it. I was feeling stressed and run down at the time so decided to give it a go. After a week or so I noticed to my surprise that I didn't struggle to do my jeans up. My stomach was normally so bloated I looked about 6 months pregnant!
I had to give a lot of thought to what I had been doing differently before I narrowed it down to the aloe drink and wondered if it could be anything to do with that. I did some research and discovered that aloe is a natural anti-inflammatory, and it also gently cleans the intestines getting rid of waste matter that may be clogging us up.
When I stopped taking the aloe the ibs symptoms came back. So, it wasn't a cure, but it was managing the symptoms in a natural way.
I tried a different type of aloe juice that I got in the health food shop, but didn't get the same benefits - it even tasted completely different - there was no pulp and it was watery. Plus it didn't come with a money back guarantee.
2. Treatment of ibs.
The second thing that helped hugely, which I only had relatively recently, was a food allergy test. I had thought this kind of thing was rubbish really and had happily eaten whatever I felt like. I did try to eat healthily however, with lots of wholegrain foods, muesli etc like you are recommended to have if you have ibs...
I was shocked to discover with the allergy test that I apparently had an intolerance to wheat, oats and dairy products. Hmm, I had eaten tons of wholewheat pasta since going vegetarian for 20 years and had started every day with a bowl of muesli covered in milk. No wonder I was rushing to the bathroom after breakfast every day. I was by now a meat eater but still had lots of oats and wheat.
This proved to me that no one treatment is right for everyone and no single diet is right for everyone as we are all different.
Since changing my diet (I now eat lots more protein like beef, chicken and fish with vegetables and fruit and rice - a simple but tasty diet!) my digestion has totally changed for the better. It took a while (over 6 months) to notice a really big improvement, although as soon as I switched to having eggs for breakfast instead of cereal I was no longer rushing to the bathroom!
3. Treatment of ibs.
The third thing that helped me was taking probiotics. I had been prescribed a lot of antibiotics in my twenties and think that really messed up the bacteria in my gut.
I think that it can be a case of trial and error if you go down the 'natural' route for treating ibs but I do hope that sharing my story may help you too.
